I have recently been reminded of an observation I heard 21 years ago while sitting in a remote village of the Ischial Indian's in Guatemala.
The locals called him Father Thomas. He was a wise man in the things of the God and had been shaped by an environment ravaged by war. The government backed military and the guerrilla fighters had just ran over his people during the years of fighting, and many had lost their lives being caught in the middle. Thomas told us one night as we sat around the fire that as difficult as the situation had been being caught in the middle of the war, there was one thing that had been even more difficult for him and those close to him. It was brothers willing to kick other brothers in a hole, so to speak, and sell them out.
I'm still so puzzled by the way people professing to be followers of Jesus treat their brothers and sisters not to mention how they treat people in the world.
Cain and Abel......Joseph's brothers kicking him into a hole and selling him into slavery....and on up through history to this day the practice continues. What gives?
