30 years ago the charismatic christian group these guys came to faith in tried to force them to choose between Jesus and the music they loved. Bono and Edge almost fell for the lie. Bono was the last one to come to the conclusion that the zealous christian group was wrong and there wasn't a problem...it was the Christians mistaken notion that was the problem. All these years later these guys message, not only through their music but what they live out through their lives has remained much truer to the simplicity of the beautiful gospel than has the complicated unintelligible mess that the religion of Christianity has all too often been spreading around the globe.
I say...let's live our lives in the simplicity of the message, living loved and loving, and watch that love and grace and sacrificial service trump what has more than likely become the most strident opponent to Jesus in the world...the religion that has high jacked the message.

Note to self: interesting potential blog post - the inherent difficulties faced in a Christian woman's mind when she indulges in inappropriate sexual thoughts about a man who is singing to Jesus.
I love how DL has the album to display. That's the correct size of an album, isn't it? Not a pissy little square box thing. I really think I want to get myself a turntable one of these days.
You are right. Only love unites our hearts. And allows us to be real. Which is why I am able to share my problems I had while watching that clip, hehe :) (Try doing that in the midst of the beast. Naw!!!)
Sorry for raving on incoherently on your blog. I actually went to bed and tried to sleep, but I'm reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and it's got me thinking just as much the second time around as it did the first. Such a wonderful book.
But the end result is this comment. Five paragraphs long and none of those paragraphs tied in to form any kind of cohesive narrative. Sorry 'bout that :) But it's 1.28 am here :) I'm going back to bed to try again.
Kent,
I am loving "No Line On the Horizon!" First, I think it is absolutely wonderful that they have posted all of the album's tracks on their website. Second, simply a brilliant move, business-wise as well.
I stayed up last night to see them on Letterman (thanks for your announcement of them doing so, by-the-way!)
Bono et all...awesome hearts. I oculd just "see" it in them, the Love they've tapped into of God. Them...living it out. I like that they don't speak of Papa Son Holy Spirit in Christian-ese whatsoever. In fact, they talk about other things, yet within those "things" I could heart the heart of God.
Blessings,
~Amy :)
I think that a few of these guys have had a peek on the other side of the ego that allows them to "live the gospel".
Sue, that was such a funny thing to read first thing after a long tiring day at work. Sorry for creating the difficulty for you having posted the video.
Amy, it was so nice to have the cd in my hand and putting it in my cd player in my vehicle and turning it up LOUD. This cd is so good.
And Roger, I think you are right.
Hey Kent,
For the first time in my life I don't have anyone to talk about this album face to face with. How did this happen? Anyhow, I'll share my random thoughts with you.
Oh yeh, DL did show "the album" and it didn't even register at first that there was something odd about that. I remember waiting for u2 albums to come out as records. Digital recordings are incredible in quality, but I miss "the record". Big artwork, looking for messages engraved in the vinyl, making a tape before it got scratchy, writing the lyrics down for friends. I even miss going to Tower Records to buy the record. As convenient as my first pre-ordered itunes download was, I spent a lot of time reminiscing.
Oh, and the album is incredible. So many songs that go straight to the heart. I didn't expect to like it as much as I do. It's wonderful, really. I'll just blather on like a teenager if you let me. I always laugh when I hear people call this "secular" music. I've always appreciated how God/love is integrated, rather than compartmentalized, in their music.
I'll be looking forward to live shows :).
"I always laugh when I hear people call this "secular" music."
What religion does to beautiful things would be nothing but laughable if it wasn't so damaging.
"I often wonder if religion is the enemy of God. It's almost like religion is what happens when the Spirit
has left the building. . .The idea of turning your music into a tool for evangelism is missing the point.
Music is the language of the spirit anyway. . .God has some really weird kids." Bono U2
"God has some really weird kids"
Hehe, yeah :) And not just in this pen, either ;)
